This product was designed and made for a friend of mine whose name is Homer Galliot who lives and works in Adelaide as a Landscape Gardener. In his spare time he assembles found objects into small sculptures. Most often the sculptures will carry no concept and are generally made from things perceived as rubbish. Homer’s compulsion to continue to make and refine his bizarre practice is driven purely by his own affinity for the objects he creates and the enjoyment received in the finding, assembling and finishing each small sculpture.

‘My favorite part is the actual creation, for sure…. it seems like I’ve got this compulsion to create, and so I just try to make the most of it, I suppose’.

Homer’s predicament:

Homer would like to start documenting his artworks as he finishes them, he has a reasonably good SLR camera in which to take the photography and wants to take the pictures on a white background to ensure the images are not filled with the mess that is his apartment and also to give a professional credible aesthetic. As he lives in a small apartment, his space is limited and can’t really afford the area for a small cyclorama, not that the space doesn’t exist, but it would consume space for 100% of the time and only get used 10% of the time.

‘Yeah, it would be kick ass to have a cyclorama, but it would definitely cramp my style for sure…. too expensive to hire a ‘cyc’ or get professional photography, especially for the size of work that I do’.

In response to this I have come up with this idea; a cabinet with a cyclorama within. We all have some kind of cabinet in our homes, be it a television cabinet, sideboard, display cabinet etc. this idea lends itself to all types of cabinet and gives a secondary function.

The cabinet is made from ‘European Beech’ and is assembled using dovetail joinery, mortise and tenon joints and rebate / housing joints. The drawer runs on modern runners and has a large enough capacity to house photography supplies; camera, compact tripod, lights etc. the cyclorama is a white laminate and is cleaned and maintained as easily as a kitchen counter. To optimize the storage space while the cabinet is not being used as a cyclorama a removable glass shelf sits on removable shelf pins to divide the space in two. The cabinet is finished with ‘stage legs’ a versatile leg system that can be applied to most furniture pieces. These come in many colours and have ability to sport wheels and leveling feet.

The cabinet would be useful for many creative artisans working in small projects.
