World of Drawers

Here is a set of American Walnut drawers that I built for a client who had seen an existing item and wanted a comparable version. It was quite clear that the exterior could not be modified to an extent in which I could claim the design as my own. So instead I claimed the internal space, in which I transferred images, to create small environments, each with its own character and emotion.

“Everybody has a secret world inside of them. All of the people of the world, I mean everybody. No matter how dull and boring they are on the outside, inside them they’ve all got unimaginable, magnificent, wonderful, stupid, amazing worlds. Not just one world. Hundreds of them. Thousands maybe.”

NEIL GAIMANTHE SANDMAN, VOL. 5: A GAME OF YOU

The appropriation of an existing product is subtle and may be compared to a musical remix, in that the existing design remains prominently the same and I have added and modified elements to create my own twist on an already great and existing product.

Concealing key elements of decoration is not new to me and could be described as an area of enthusiasm. The set of drawers is a perfect example of a simple shape and design with extravagant expressions concealed within – like a swan on the water its visible nature seemingly calm as it glides along, however underneath the surface its legs are working busily.

The cabinet will serve its functional requirements as a means of storage, but maybe just as important it will also act as a place for exploration, discovery, affinity and re-discovery.
